You might be resigned to wearing a pair of headphones all day to block out the sounds of noisy neighbors or other distractions, but researchers at MIT have developed a paper-thin speaker that can be applied to almost any surface like wallpaper, turning objects like walls into giant noise-cancelling speakers. Tear apart the speakers in almost any consumer device that produces sound, and youll find essentially the same hardware: a membrane paired with a coil of wire that produces a magnetic field or other movement mechanism . When electricity is applied, this causes the membrane to move back and forth and push air in specific patterns, creating sound waves that reach our ears. I dunk pand ts a simple formula thats worked well for over 150 years, but one that requires a certain amount of power and a certain amount of space to work. Researchers at MITs Org air max 98 anic and Nanostructured Electronics Laboratory have created a new kind of thin-film speaker thats as thin and flexible as a sheet of paper, but is also able to generate clear, high-quality sound, even when bonded to a rigid surface like a wall. Bering Sea ice has been battered all year by warm waters and wild winter heat waves. But at least it wont have to suffer any more, because now its nearly all gone, basically a month ahead of schedule. The bizarre saga of Arctic sea ice this winter has extended into spring, with the Bering Sea north of Alaska being ground zero for freaky ice behavior. The Transition Metals On the main periodic table, the transition metals form the slender bridge between the two chunks on the left and the right. Theyre metals. You can beat any one of them into a thin wire, and then use that wire to conduct heat and electricity. But the transition metals also have other qualities. Most of these qualities are linked to the placement of the metals electrons: We know that atoms link up by sharing electrons, and these tend to be the electrons on the atoms outer shells. Transition metals have electrons that link up on both their outer, and one of their inner, shells. This quality gives transition metals a more complex and varied life than other metals. Such a thing is not guaranteed with transition metals, which, when put in a solution, can drop one element and pick up a better one. A comprehensive re-analysis of a skull fragment found in a Greek cave back in the late 1970s s airmaxplus uggests early modern humans were present in Eurasia some 210,000 years ago. Its the earliest indication of our species on the continent, but the lack of supporting archaeological evidence raises some questions. New research published today in Nature describes two fossilized skull fragments found in Apidima Cave in Southern Greece in 1978. A team led by paleoanthropologist Katerina Harvati from Eberhard Karls University of Tu虉bingen ide yeezy ntified the remnants as belonging to two individuals, an early modern human Homo sapiens and a Neanderthal. The human fragment, dubbed Apidima 1, is just the back of the skull and was dated to 210,000 years ago, making it the oldest evidence of modern humans in Eurasia. The Neanderthal fragment, called Apidima 2, was dated to 170,000 years asics gel ago and is considerably more complete than the human skull, but it was found without the lower jaw or teeth. Unfortunately, no other archaeological or paleontological evidence was uncovered at the site, and neither fragment was found in its original depositional layer. These and other limitations aside, the notion that early modern humans were present in Greece some 210,000 years ago is wholly plausible, and even expected.
